CHILDREN AND ANIMALS

When sketching children or animals, speed is the prime requisite for both are in an almost continual state of movement. Don’t despair if for a long time your drawings appear awkward and unskillful. Persist in trying to capture the essentials of movement and gesture rather than meticulous detail.

Should you find that the subject of children or animals has particular appeal for you, I suggest that you specialize to some extent. With practice you will gradually find yourself able to make more finished drawings without any great loss of speed.

In regard to proportion, keep in mind that a child’s head is somewhat larger in relation to his body than that of an adult.

With animals don’t be too concerned with furry effects, but remember the underlying forms.
